Computing Quality Framework: fostering a high-quality computing provision for all

Since its origin, over 4,600 schools have joined the Computing Quality Framework, with over 100 earning the nationally recognised Computing Quality Mark. But what are these, and what benefits do they pose to you and your school?

What is the Computing Quality Framework?

The Computing Quality Framework (CQF) is a framework intended to help primary and secondary schools to track and review their progress in developing an exemplary computing curriculum. The framework provides a process for identifying strengths and areas for development and links to the NCCE's resources, tailored to your school's specific needs.

The CQF also entails opportunities for commitment and involvement from across the school and a continuum for schools to discuss how they can move from a basic level of provision to aspirational practice.

Self-evaluation is the first step to improvement – to solve problems and make changes, it’s vital to know where strengths and weaknesses lie. The tool allows you to assess your school’s progress in developing the computing curriculum against several criteria, which are structured in the following dimensions:

  • Leadership and Vision
  • Curriculum and Qualifications
  • Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
  • Staff Development
  • Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and SEND
  • Careers Education
  • Impact on Outcomes

Once you have selected the level you currently grade your school at for each dimension, you will be presented with relevant and tailored actions to help you progress and improve and develop as a school.


How does the Computing Quality Framework benefit schools?

We recently sat down with Fosse Way Academy to discuss their experience going through the CQF.

“[We] wanted to promote the school and achievement of all staff and pupils - we are all good at what we do, from Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6. Having such a holistic and extensive structure to deliver computing to all pupils is something not generally found in a primary school environment...

“Going through the CQF allowed us to align our computing curriculum with national standards and best practices. This has ensured that our pupils receive a comprehensive and up-to-date education in computing that meets or exceeds established benchmarks”.

We also spoke with Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, who explained that their already strong computing provision was strengthened and recognised by going through the framework.

The CQF has helped the department to self-review and fine-tune how we operate. It has sparked several very useful discussions and caused us to challenge our existing thinking. This has led to us making changes to elements of our teaching and the way we have structured our curriculum.” 


What is the Computing Quality Mark?

The Computing Quality Mark is the certification awarded to schools and academies to acknowledge and celebrate the quality of the institution’s computing provision. Schools can apply for the Mark once they have reached Level 4 across every dimension.
