Preparing to teach GCSE computer science?
Are you delivering GCSE computer science for the first time this September? Or, simply looking to upskill your subject knowledge around the GCSE computer science qualification?
This summer, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us in York for our Preparing to teach GCSE computer science residential. Covering three days of intensive CPD, which will contribute to your subject knowledge certificate, you will complete the following courses:
- Python programming constructs: sequencing, selection and iteration
- The internet and cyber security
- Higher attainment in GCSE computer science: meeting the challenges of the exams
Over the three days, you will be immersed in the topics and get to grips with the three programming constructs, using the text-based language Python. You will learn how the internet functions, including how packets are used to transfer data, the use of protocols and the threats presented by using the internet.
Paul Long will be your facilitator for the three days and will be on hand to support you through the Computer Science Accelerator (CSA) programme. He will utilise his vast knowledge of the GCSE specifications to ensure you have the knowledge and confidence ahead of September.
Not only will you complete three days of CPD, but we have put together a broader package to enhance your CPD journey.
- Programming with micro:bits
Following the Python programming constructs course, you will have the opportunity to take the programming skills you have learnt and apply them to the micro:bit. You will have 90-minutes of hands-on experience with physical computing kits - we will even discuss how your school can loan FREE class sets of micro:bits.
2. Engage with a STEM Ambassador
You will have the opportunity to engage with Prof. Keeley A Crockett, Professor in Computational Intelligence at Manchester Metropolitan University. During the session, you’ll hear about the benefits of using STEM Ambassadors in the classroom, and have the chance to ask questions about the impact Prof. Crockett has had on young people.
3. Preparing to take the test support session
On the second evening, you will be able to attend a support session, where you can revise and ask questions ahead of completing the short final test.
4. CSA Graduation event
Once you pass the CSA programme, you will have the chance to attend one of our exciting Graduation events. By booking the residential, we’ll reserve you a space at the York graduation event, scheduled to take place directly after on 30 June from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.
5. Free additional accommodation
